Hi Lilian! How were the conditions at Hood River?
Hood River is truly the heart of wing foiling in the Columbia River Gorge. It is windy almost every day from May to September. On the other hand, be careful, the wind blowing in the gorges can be very strong and irregular.
The water is quite cold early in the season as the snow melts, but increases throughout the season to 22 degrees. So shorty and wetsuit are recommended.
The wind near the Hood River Sandbar can be gusty at times. The best conditions are upwind of the sandbar and in the river near the Washington side. This is where the wind will be most established.
What are the best spots for winging?
The best spots are Hood River, the Hatch and Stevenson. Hood River is arguably Oregon's most famous town. The crossroads between Columbia and Hood River is truly a mecca for board sports.
What gear did you take to Hood River?
I was with the Trix 4'5 of 45L. It is well optimized for waterstarting, even with the currents of the river. Thanks to its triple concave, the take off is fast and efficient. The extreme rigidity of the board allows good optimal control and responsiveness in jumps. This is the board I recommend for Hood River!
In foil I was with the S800 and S1000, for its incisive carving and maneuverability. It is also super responsive to be able to send in freestyle.
I also had the Wing V2 in 3m, 3.5 and 4m. You really have to start on small sizes because the wind blows up to 30 knots almost every day.
What to do when there is no wind in Hood River?
During the summer it is quite rare, but there are many activities. If you like hiking, rafting or mountain biking. It is even possible to ski on Mount Hood.
Have you discovered any nice restaurants or bars for dinner and/or a drink after a day in the water?
My favorite places are the Stoked Café and the terrace at Ferment Brewing. I really like Mexican restaurants, my favorite is the Taqueria in the city center. And for a night out, Whiskey Tango is the one and only place in Hood River.
